Junk drawer
You need somewhere to store all those little bits and pieces of, well, junk that you can’t throw away and this is the perfect solution. You can’t throw them away because if you do it will come back to haunt you and you will find that you need it. For instance the other day I found what looked to be the battery cover of a remote control, so I went around looking for a remote with a missing back cover, and alternately trying the piece on every remote I own just to be doubly sure. Since it didn’t actually fit anything that I could lay my hands on, I took this as a sign and threw the thing out. Sure enough I found the little gadget to which it belonged to, a few days later, but by then it was too late. The thought had crossed my mind to put it in the junk drawer but for some reason I decided against it. This has happened to me before but pre-my junk drawer days. In that instance I kept the piece in a “safe” place and never found it again! With a junk drawer at you disposal you have the option of putting these small one-off items all into one place. This way there is no associated guilt for throwing them and if you ever you need to look for something you’ll know where you need to go. In effect you will have your own separate lost and found drawer. The trick here, is to not let it get too out of hand. It becomes a clutter hazard if the drawer becomes overfull because then, when you can’t stuff anything else into the drawer you will start to place them anywhere you can. Some people also use a box or small tray as their junk drawer. The only problem that I found with this was that if I was being especially careless or forgetful, I would tend to tip over the entire thing. Then there was the double problem I encountered of having this box sitting on my countertop gathering dust. The other problem I had was that tended to overfill the box, and often with items that didn’t belong in there. With a separate drawer though, since I have to physically bend down and open it to place things inside, I won’t do so unless it’s to put the correct “lost” item inside. |
